We had our first real snow fall in Colorado this past weekend which got me thinking about the clothes I wear in the Winter (or in Colorado's case Spring and Fall as well). There is a short list of things that are must haves, because I wear them so often. So if you live somewhere cold you probably agree, and if you're planning on traveling somewhere cold you might want to have these things.
The one I have is black and white, but any neutral colors will do. The important thing is that it's versatile. It has a long sleeve, but that can easily be rolled up. It can we worn with or without tights or leggings. Wear it with boots or flats, and throw on a scarf if you want. It's a very easy piece to change up with the weather or your mood.
two. Tights
I could never live without my black tights. My favorite are my SPANX ones. They are thick, as well as good quality and I've worn a pair for two years without a single snag. I have a couple different pairs, but my favorites are the reversible which are black on one side and brown on the other. Genius right?
three. Oversize Sweater
This is my favorite piece for the weekends. Throw this on over a pair of skinny jeans with a scarf and boots and you've got my go-to outfit for cold weather. It's cute, comfortable, and warm! When I was making this list I decided I didn't have enough of these sweaters, so my mission this weekend is to add to my repertoire.
four. Silky Button Up
This really is the perfect shirt. You can wear it with a skirt, jeans, under a sweater, or with a scarf. In a perfect world I would love to own one my Equipment because they are perfect, but they are also $200, so I'll stick with one from Old Navy. I know J.Crew has a great option as well!
five. Faux Leather Leggings
I fought these for a long time, because I didn't think they were right with my body type, but once I purchased them and realized just how comfortable they were I knew I made the right choice. They go with alot, but look best with tunics or dresses (things that are longer).
six. Black Skinnies
A black pair of skinnies can be worn casual or dressy and that's my favorite thing about them. They are a great substitute for leggings when you're not sure if your top is long enough, because nobody wants to be that girl. Definitely a closet staple for me!
seven. Dark Wash Skinnies
This is just a given. Everyone should own at least one pair of dark wash skinnies that fit comfortable and hug in all the right places. They should be long enough to wear with flats or heels, but also tight enough to tuck into boots. My two favorite pairs come from NY&Co and Forever21.
eight. Pencil Skirt
I just bought a dark black pencil skirt that has leather accents and I know it's going to be on heavy rotation in the Winter. I can wear it to work with an appropriate top and I can also throw on some sequins and my leather jacket for a night out.
nine. Leather Jacket
I live for my leather jacket in the winter! Of course I have my warmer jackets for the snow, but leather is my go-to. Make sure you buy one that is roomy enough for a thin sweater so you can get the most use out of it. I throw mine on almost every time I run out the door.
ten. Tall Brown Boots
The Steve Madden Intyce. These are the best boots I've ever purchased and I know countless people that agree. They are the perfect cognac color that can be worn with brown or black, and they are simple so they can be casual or dressy. I wear these with jeans, leggings, dresses, and skirts. You name it and I've probably worn these boots with it!
eleven. Leopard Loafers
Another new edition, but such a great shoe. I treat leopard as a neutral so I wear these with everything and any color. If you're not sure about the leopard, just stick with a simple black loafer or flat and you will wear them with everything.
I left out any accessories, but my go-to for those is a couple of scarves, a great watch, and some long layering necklaces.
Do you live in a cold weather place? What are your must haves?

Love that oversized sweater. They are so great for leggings and boots.
OMG! You just described my closet. Minus the leather pants... I haven't gotten on board with those yet, but love them on other people! But seriously... now I think I need a new striped dress. HAHA
I've been on the hunt for faux leather leggings... and I can't find a good pair!! Where did you get yours?
Those spanx sound amazing. I think Santa will be bringing me these early!
I've gotta have all this. Especially those leather leggings. Need to find me a pair, asap. For my trip to DENVER!
Looks like you just packed a virtual suitcase for your trip to Chitown! I'll be donning my sequined dress for sure. Too cute, as always!
I am not kidding when I say this... I would wear these exact things!!! seriously! this is all so my style!
p.s. I liked the grey sweater so much but I looked at the price.. almost $2,000! dang I bet we can find a similar one :)!
My must-haves: scarves, sweaters & lots of warm & cozy layers :)
Cable knit, tights in gorgeous colors and prints and boots!
Obsessed with my leopard flats. I rock them constantly and they're the perfect pop to an otherwise standard 'fit.
Help with the faux leather leggings!! A. Can a big-booty hoe wear them?
B. If she can, any suggestions on where to purchase?
I really wonder if my big thighs and Texas Toast (big booty) would look good in faux leather leggings. Love your choices! I wish we had colder weather in TX!
I have those exact same Steve Madden boots. I paid full price for them which about made me vomit, but I don't regret it at all. LOVE THEM and wear the heck out of them. Even though they sort of make my feel like my ankles look fat. I really need to buy some tights, too.
I've been eyeing those Madden boots for like two seasons now....hmm if I can just find them onsale anywhere....and I am sorely temped to cave and buy some leather leggings.
Every single one of these, yes... I think I need to go shopping now...
We got our first snow too...and I immediately pulled out the huge sweaters. :) I need all of those items......definitely.
OMG I SO want that striped dress and the quilted leather jacket! Love!
love the sweaters!
Love your picks! Since I'm in Chicago I would add a few more layers, a giant puffy coat, a hat, gloves...sigh...is it Spring yet? ;)
Time out...tights that are black on one side and brown on the other. I have got to find those!
I've been considering faux leather leggings and haven't been able to bite the bullet. I'm chunky in the butt and thighs and am so concerned they'll look atrocious on me but I love the look!
Maybe a little searching needs to happen for the right pair!
great post! you described about 95%of my closet. Still working up the guts to get the faux leather leggings and leopard loafers but I'm sensing they will be in my closet very soon :)
I love this post!!
1) The striped dress is a must! It's even better with a good long sleeved shirt (think chambray) under, and then the sleeves rolled up! I just did a post on that look and I'm seriously obsessed!
2) I love silky shirts. I have a hunter green one that I wear the heck out of!
3)I want to add leather to my wardrobe so bad---but I can't find the perfect thing. Maybe skinnies could be the answer?
Sorry for the book, but I just had to share :)
reversable tights? get out. I have to google those stat.
Girl, I'm glad you said faux leather leggings. Remind me to tell you about the time I wore leather pants to a club, made the mistake of using the bathroom and then got stuck in the bathroom because I couldn't get my pants back up. True story.
I want faux leather leggings but M
Would never shut up about them so I refrain ;(
Just found your blog via I wore yoga pants to work. Pretty hilarious!! Keep it up!
